About the museum
The Múzeum Slovenských národných rád (Museum of the Slovak National Councils) in Myjava was built in 1966–1968 to a design by the architect Martin Kusý and solemnly opened in 1968, on the 120th anniversary of the first Slovak National Council. It has been part of the Slovak National Museum since its founding. The complex combines a new extension of iron and cast concrete with the house of Anna Kolényová from the 1830s, in which the first Slovak National Council (SNR) met for the first time on Slovak territory on 19 September 1848.
Later further historic buildings were added to the memorial: the Bradáč House and the Kubovčiak House. The grounds contain memorials dedicated to 1848, for example a relief by Rudolf Pribiš, a sculpture group by Klára Pataky and a sculpture by Jozef Kostka. The current exhibition, Slovenská národná rada v toku času (The Slovak National Council Through Time), traces the path of the SNR from 1848 to the establishment of the independent Slovak Republic in 1993; part of it is installed in the original setting of the house of Anna Kolényová.
The museum also presents the podbradlansko-podjavorinský región (Podbradlie–Podjavorinie region), and since 1990 its outlying branch, the Múzeum Milana Rastislava Štefánika (Museum of Milan Rastislav Štefánik) in Košariská, has belonged to it.
