About the museum

The island of Anholt lies in the middle of the Kattegat. In 1985 islanders founded a local history and archive association, which in 1992 bought the former doctor's house of 1867 in Anholt By to set up a museum in it. The house was badly dilapidated and has been gradually restored since then, with respect for its original character.

Changing displays are shown with furniture, tools, traditional costumes, and photographs from the lives of the islanders; an extensive collection of photos and newspaper clippings is open to all visitors, and old films can be watched. Among the curiosities are objects from a Satanic cult that were found on the island. In the courtyard there is an exhibition on the natural history of Anholt, and in the rear building a presentation on the Stone Age on the island, when the area was still connected to Jutland.

Other themes include fishing, seafaring, and lighthouse service, as well as the British occupation of the island from 1809 to 1814. The association also received the island's old lifeboat, which was in service from 1919 to 1969. A small local archive is attached to the museum.
