About the museum
Monarkmuseum displays products from the Halland manufacturers Monark and Rex, with an emphasis on the 1950s. Monark's history began in Varberg in 1908, when Birger Svensson registered the firm Svenska Cykeldepoten. The products were given the name Monark in 1917, and during the 20th century the company grew into one of the largest manufacturers of two-wheelers in the Nordic countries. Rex started when Axel Peter Nilsson began assembling bicycles from purchased parts at his men's outfitter's shop (herrekiperingsaffär).
The collection includes bicycles, mopeds and motorcycles, but also other Monark products such as radios, hockey pucks and outboard motors, as well as old posters and newspaper advertisements. According to the municipality, the museum is the only place that shows everything Monark has made since 1908, and it has Sweden's largest collection of Monark radios and televisions.
The museum is run on a personal basis and since 2025 has a special Rex exhibition on the second floor. QR codes next to the objects give more information on your phone.
