Dansk Motor- og Maskinsamling
Northern Europe's largest collection of stationary engines near Grenaa: over 450 mostly restored-to-running machines, primarily of Danish production.
About the museum
The foundation of the collection was laid by Henrik Højer, who got his first stationary engine at the age of twelve and made it a lifelong passion. His interest was especially in engines with Danish history, rare variants, and machines with a good story. From the beginning it was not just about preservation: the engines were meant to run again, and missing or worn parts were rebuilt according to the original. Later, collections from other private individuals and associations were added; today an independent institution runs the museum on the Kristiansminde grounds near Grenaa.
With more than 450 engines, the collection is regarded as the largest of its kind in Northern Europe. It includes machines from the years 1868 to 1960; the oldest piece is an atmospheric engine by Otto & Langen from 1868. Most exhibits date from the golden age of Danish industry between 1890 and 1930 and tell of more than 250 Danish engine factories whose production made the modernization of the country possible. Particularly extensive is the collection of diesel engines from the Burmeister & Wain shipyard, which around 1930 held almost half of the world market for marine diesels, including the engines of the Flakfortet from 1914.
Most of the engines have been restored to running condition and are demonstrated under load. The workshop operates as a center of expertise for historic technology and restores engines for other museums, the Skibsbevaringsfonden, companies, and private individuals. Every year on the last Saturday in April, a large engine meeting with a parts market attracts visitors; in addition there is a veteran truck meeting and the Dansk Mølledag in June.
