Galleri Grenen
Art house at the Grenen headland near Skagen with seascapes by founder Axel Lind, glass art, and changing exhibitions for sale.
About the museum
The house at Grenen, Denmark's northernmost tip, was built in 1959 as a dance hall and restaurant of the Skagen locals. In 1977 the painter Axel Lind bought the building and set up the Grenen Kunstmuseum in it. Lind, born in 1907 and raised in Rådvad near København, had previously lived in Sweden for about six decades.
Until 2011 the museum mainly showed Lind's own marine paintings. Until his death in 2011 – shortly before his 104th birthday – the artist looked after the house himself together with his staff.
Today the house operates as Galleri Grenen. On about 600 square meters it combines Axel Lind's collection with contemporary art: in addition to the permanent exhibitions on Lind and the glass artist Janusz Walentynowicz, changing artists show their work during the season, most of which can also be bought. Since 2013 the art association Grenen Kunstforening has also been affiliated with the house, organizing lectures, art trips, and an annual raffle of works among its members.
