About the museum

The Læsø Museum was founded on June 22, 1938. That same year, with support from the local savings bank, it acquired a seaweed-thatched half-timbered farm near Byrum, which opened as a local history museum in 1941 and is now a separate exhibition house called the Museumsgården. Since 1985, the museum has been a state-recognized local cultural history museum for the cultural and natural history of the island.

Today the museum has its administrative seat and its main exhibitions in the Museumshuset, a former merchant's farm on the main street of Byrum. Here you can see the seafaring and fishing exhibition about the men of Læsø and the sea, the boatbuilding of the Dolmer shipyard, strandings and rescue operations, and changing special exhibitions. One highlight is the Bogøgård silver hoard: in 1982, a farmer digging a foundation came across a clay jar with more than 1,800 coins from the 17th century, one of the largest coin finds in Denmark.

The Museumshuset also houses the local history archive, a new storage facility for the collection, a museum shop, and a small café. The museum also includes other sites on the island: the seaweed-thatched Hedvigs Hus near Østerby, one of the lobster huts at Horneks Odde, and the fishing cutter FN 162 Ellen.
