Læsø Saltsyderi

Reconstructed medieval salt-boiling huts on Læsø where salt is boiled from salty groundwater just as it was centuries ago.

About the museum

From the Middle Ages on, salt boiling was for centuries the economic foundation of the island of Læsø: salty groundwater from the beach meadows of the Rønnerne was evaporated in iron pans over an open fire. The enormous demand for wood caused the island's forests to almost disappear, until the boiling was eventually banned.

In 1990 the medieval archaeologist Jens Vellev launched the project "Læsø Salt". Excavations that he continued over many years together with the architect Hans Langballe, and studies of old archive sources, formed the basis for the reconstruction of a medieval boiling hut, which was inaugurated on June 5, 1991. In 1998 a large double hut was added, reconstructed after a facility excavated on the Langerøn.

From the start the project combined research and visitor attraction and began as an employment project of the local production school. Today the company Læsø Salt A/S runs the saltworks with its own production; visitors can watch the salt boilers at work in the huts, hear talks on the island's salt history, and buy the salt in the shop.
