Museumsgården
Læsø's seaweed-thatched farmstead in its original location, furnished as around 1860 – the open-air department of Læsø Museum in Byrum.
About the museum
The Museumsgården, formerly called Lynggården or "På Lynget", is a four-winged farm with dark-tarred half-timbering and the massive eelgrass roof typical of Læsø. Written sources document residents since the 1630s; the main house and stable were built around 1700, the main house was extended around 1800, and around 1860 the wings grew together into a closed complex. The timber includes parts of stranded ships.
Læsø Museum was founded on June 22, 1938 and bought the farm in the same year with the support of Læsø Sparekasse. In 1941 it opened as Hjemstavnsgården with a big folk festival. The last resident, Sine Krogbæk, born on the farm in 1865, lived there until her death in 1949 and in her last years looked after her parental home as custodian. In 1950 the buildings were placed under heritage protection; in 1978 the post windmill was moved to its present location.
The rooms still show the furnishings from the time when Sine's parents took over the farm around 1860: open hearths, alcove beds, no electric light and a well in the yard. The farm tells of life on the island when the men were at sea for long periods and the women ran the farming. The exhibition section deals with seaweed roofs, Læsø costumes with silver jewelry and paintings from the collection; in the old stable, an exhibition has run since 2024 on Læsø's path to UNESCO World Heritage status, and in the barn, since 2025, an interactive short history of the island.
