Kystmuseet Sæby
Town museum in the half-timbered farmstead Konsul Ørums Gård in the middle of Sæby: the history of the harbor and trading town from the Middle Ages to a seaside resort.
About the museum
The museum opened in 1922 under the name Østvendsyssel Museum. In 1959 it moved into the half-timbered farmstead Konsul Ørums Gård in Sæby's old town and was renamed Sæby Museum. The building dates back to the 17th century and acquired its present appearance around 1800. Today the museum belongs, as Kystmuseet Sæby, to Nordjyllands Kystmuseum, based in Frederikshavn.
The exhibitions lead through the development of Sæby, which received town rights in 1524. In the Middle Ages the Carmelite order shaped the town; its monastery gave rise to today's Sæby Kirke, whose frescoes the museum makes accessible virtually. The mouth of the Sæby Å was the only natural harbor of Vendsyssel until 1879 and formed the basis for mills, dye works, and tanneries.
With the discovery of an iron-rich spring in 1883, spa guests, artists, and writers came to the town; Sæby developed into a seaside resort. An exhibition on tourism is devoted to this chapter, complemented by a collection of topographical art from Sæby and the Sæbygård Skov. The museum also includes a historic classroom, a small nostalgic general store, and a courtyard.
