Frederikshavn Kunstmuseum
Museum of modern art and crafts in Frederikshavn with works by Karl Bovin and one of the world's largest ex libris collections.
About the museum
The Frederikshavn Kunstmuseum has existed since 1978 and sees itself as a museum of modern art and crafts with a special focus on artists from the region. It is run by the Frederikshavn Kunstforening, an art association with about 650 members.
The core of the collection is the work of the landscape painter Karl Bovin (1907–1985), who was born in Frederikshavn, co-founded the artists' association Corner and was awarded the Thorvaldsen Medal. The museum owns 145 of his works; the foundation is formed by seven large-format paintings that Bovin created in 1941 for the town's library. In "Bovins Corner" his paintings are on permanent view. In addition, with 311 works, there is the largest collection in Denmark of Erik Liljenberg's (1942–2014) dot paintings.
A special focus is ex libris, personal bookplates: the museum holds one of the largest collections of this small-scale graphic art worldwide, shows it in a permanent exhibition and has operated a digital ex libris museum since 2010. A specialist library is open to interested visitors by arrangement.
Five to six changing exhibitions take place each year. In addition, the building is a venue for theater, concerts, lectures, art films and a painting school for children.
