Kystmuseet Bangsbo Fort
Bunker museum in a German coastal battery above Frederikshavn, expanded by the Danish navy during the Cold War, with a wide view of the Kattegat.
About the museum
Bangsbo Fort lies about 80 meters above the sea on a plateau on the southern edge of Frederikshavn. The German Kriegsmarine built the installation during the occupation to protect the harbor, which was important for traffic to Norway; in 1944 it received guns from the Danish artillery ship Niels Juel. Around 70 concrete structures date from the Second World War.
After 1945 the Danish navy took over the site, added ten more bunkers around 1950, and used the fort for coastal defense during the Cold War. A small part is still in military use today. The fact that two eras are visible in one place distinguishes Bangsbo Fort from other German fortifications in Denmark.
Following an initiative of 1991, two gun bunkers were first restored; the Bangsbo Museum built up a bunker museum in cooperation with the navy and since 2005 has operated the non-military part on its own. Today the fort belongs to the Nordjyllands Kystmuseum; about 20 bunkers have been opened up as museum spaces, at least half of them accessible on opening days. Exhibitions tell of the German navy 1940–1945, of the secret NEPS fuel pipeline of the Cold War, and of 39 people from Frederikshavn Municipality who became victims of Nazi ideology.
