About the museum

The main building of the Hiiumaa Museum is in the house where the directors of the Hiiu-Kärdla Kalevi Factory lived until the mid-20th century. It was popularly called Pikk Maja (the Long House). The Long House has been the main building of the museum since 1998. Over 60 metres long and built in the 1830s–1840s, it is the longest wooden house in Kärdla that has survived to this day.

In Soviet times various government offices were housed in the building, including the education department and a library, and solemn wedding ceremonies were held there, as they still are today. The exhibition rooms are on two floors: on the ground floor there is a hall with three exhibition rooms, a play room and a souvenir shop, and on the second floor a gallery. Exhibitions change several times a year. The Hiiumaa Museums Foundation also runs the Kassari museum house, the Rudolf Tobias House Museum and the Mihkli Farm Museum.

The hall on the ground floor, the exhibition rooms, the play room and the shop are on the same floor; the gallery on the second floor can be reached only by stairs.
