About the museum
The museum was opened by the Hiiumaa Military History Society on 9 August 2007 in the former border guard cordon at Tahkuna. The crown jewel of the exhibition is the barrel BB-316 of the 180 mm coastal defence gun from the Kukeraba battery at Tahkuna. The display presents Hiiumaa’s coastal defence installations, weapons and ammunition, and the Soviet border guard era: barracks life, surveillance and communication equipment, and the reconstruction of the border strip.
Indoors, the sea radar stands in its original place, and there are shells, cartridge cases, helmets, caps, uniforms, communication equipment and civil defence equipment. The outdoor exhibition includes the armoured vehicles BTR-70 and BRDM-2, the vehicles ZIL-157 and GAZ-66, a shelter, a border guard hut, sea mines, an anti-tank gun, a border guard watchtower, and radar and radio masts.
