About the museum
Galerii Seek is a branch of the Fotomuuseum of the Tallinna Linnamuuseum (Tallinn City Museum) and an exhibition pavilion on Väike-Pääsukese Street, by Rävala puiestee. The pavilion presents contemporary photography and camera-based art as well as Estonian photographic heritage.
Inside the building are the ruins from the 13th–14th centuries that belonged to the former Jaani seegi (St. John’s Hospice) complex. In the Middle Ages the seegi was an important health-care institution where the sick were looked after. The excavations in summer and autumn 2003 brought to light the stone walls of a hospital building (14th–16th centuries), a 13th-century cellar, a 17th-century glassmaker’s workshop and two 19th-century houses. Heritage protection authorities allowed these to be demolished to make room for a tunnel and an underground car park.
The pavilion was designed by the architectural office Ansambel. The gallery is open in the summer season and closed in winter.
