About the museum
The Kalevipoeg Museum in the village of Kääpa in Mustvee Parish is a place where the stories of the national epic Kalevipoeg can be discovered in a playful way. Reopened in 2020 after complete renovation, the museum lets visitors take part in the events of the epic through interactive solutions: travel on board the large ship Lennuk, watch a short film about Kalevipoeg, or take on the role of Kalevipoeg in virtual reality and fight Vanapagan.
Kalevipoeg has been a great source of inspiration for Estonian artists, and works based on the epic are shown on screens in the museum. Along the walls there are numerous editions of “Kalevipoeg” from Estonia and translations from elsewhere in the world, and the epic can be listened to through headphones as an audiobook. The museum has puzzles for older visitors and hands-on activities for the youngest.
In front of the museum is the Kalevipoeg play yard, where Kalevipoeg’s tools and furniture have been turned into attractions. The yard also has two log buildings, an old Cossack house and a newer barn, in which there is a local history exhibition. Half a kilometre away are Kalevipoeg’s sword and the Kääpa river; there is also an adventure park.
