About the museum
The Kihnu Muuseum (Kihnu Museum) operates in the former school building in Linaküla, which opened as a modern museum on 20 June 2009 after a thorough renovation. The museum presents the folk culture of Kihnu island, which is on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage.
Visitors can see the ground floor of the building, which holds a permanent exhibition on everyday island life, seafaring, handicrafts and folk costumes, the life work of well-known Kihnu men and the works of Kihnu folk artists. On the first floor are the staff rooms, a store, a reading room for the study of folk culture and a meeting room.
The museum organises guided introductions, workshops and community cultural events, and Kihnu handicrafts and souvenirs can be bought there. The island can be reached by ferry from Munalaiu harbour; the crossing takes about half an hour.
