About the museum
The Ainažu jūrskolas muzejs was founded on 21 July 1969; its initiator was the deep-sea captain J. Skolis. Funds for restoring the building were provided by a fishermen’s cooperative and an Estonian collective farm, and the first exhibition was created by museum specialists under the direction of the Rīgas vēstures un kuģniecības muzejs (Riga History and Shipping Museum). The collection of the first exhibition was gathered on the Vidzeme coast in the early decades of the 20th century.
The museum recalls the first Latvian and Estonian nautical school, its activities and its importance for building Latvian self-confidence. In the classroom visitors are greeted by a wax figure of Captain Kristiāns Dāls, the display stands show old photographs, and you can learn how sailing boats were built in the coastal fishing villages and launched into the water. A special story begins when the old sailors’ chest is opened, revealing a bottle of rum, a walking stick made from a fish’s spine, a pipe and other objects.
The museum is a branch of the Riga History and Shipping Museum.
