About the museum
The Kalame farm was established in the first half of the 19th century by the lord of the Selja manor as a home for a fisherman. At the end of the 19th century the artist Richard Sagritsa’s (1910–1968) father came there as a tenant, and later the farm became a summer home and workplace for the artist until his death. Sagritsa studied at Pallas, and several other artists also spent their summers at Kalame farm, for example Nikolai Triik, Oskar Murdmaa and Voldemar Mellik.
In 1997 the artist’s widow bequeathed the farm, the family’s art collection, archive, photographs and furnishings to the Rakvere Museum, and the farm complex opened as a museum in 2000. The museum’s collection includes about three thousand objects, of which nearly half are works of art. In addition to Sagritsa’s own works there are works given to Sagritsa, for example by Nikolai Triik and Eduard Viiralt.
The former cold room at the western end of the building, a 19th-century threshing-barn dwelling, was converted into an artist’s studio in the 1960s, where his works are exhibited. The most unusual building of the farm complex is the 19th-century net shed of limestone, where fishing equipment is displayed. The Alice Sagritsa stone workshop also belongs to the museum.
