About the museum
Rudolf Tobias is the founder of Estonian classical music and spent most of his childhood in this house. Built in the first half of the 19th century, the building is one of the few of its kind preserved in Estonia: it is a town house that retains elements of a farmhouse.
The house museum has an exhibition on the life of the composer in Estonia, St Petersburg and Berlin, and furniture and musical instruments from the 19th and 20th centuries. In the yard are a barn, a cellar-shed, a windmill typical of Hiiumaa and a typical well. From here there is a view over the bird-rich Käina Bay; the house is on the edge of the village of Käina, and the village centre is about a kilometre away.
