About the museum
Vao tower castle was built in the second half of the 14th century of local limestone. It was restored in 1986 on the initiative of the Vao state farm. In August 2020 the second part of the film trilogy “Apteeker Melchior” (“Pharmacist Melchior”), titled “Viirastus” (“Apparition”), was filmed at the castle.
On the ground floor the exhibition presents the history of the Vao tower castle and manor and of the surrounding villages. The first floor is a medieval living room with a lavatorium (washing place) and a dansker (privy); the furnishings imitate the room’s former appearance, and the windows are decorated with stained glass. On the second floor are paintings by the artist E. Veermäe depicting people in medieval costume. A stair built into the wall leads down to the cellar.
