About the museum
The old-technology shelter (vanatehnika varjupaik) opened in Järva-Jaani on 20 June 2004. Since November 2019 it has been part of the Järva-Jaani Museum Centre (Järva-Jaani muuseumide keskus) and is managed by the Järva-Jaani Tuletõrje Selts (Järva-Jaani Fire Brigade Society). The shelter is one of the largest and most unusual old-technology exhibitions in Estonia.
The exhibition covers most of the outdoor area of the museum centre, almost two hectares. A walk across the site can exceed one kilometre, and it is divided into themes. The equipment has been kept in the condition in which it arrived at the shelter. More than five hundred machines have been collected, including buses, lorries, tractors, a road grader and a road roller, grain combine harvesters, cars and lorries, special-purpose and public-transport vehicles. Military equipment, trailers and fire engines form a separate sector. The electronic catalogue of the exhibits contains nearly 600 exhibits with photos and detailed information.
For railway enthusiasts the wagon museum presents the history of narrow-gauge railways. Construction of the narrow-gauge line on the Türi–Tamsalu route began in 1917, and the railway that ran through Järva-Jaani operated until 1973. Every year the shelter hosts the “Retrokulgurite päevad” (Retro Vehicle Days), the shelter’s main event of the year.
