About the museum
Ålands museum was founded in 1934 and is tasked with managing all the museums, sights and collections owned by the Åland Government. Its operations are based in the main building in central Mariehamn at Storagatan 1, next to the town hall park. The public part of the building houses Ålands kulturhistoriska museum (Åland Cultural History Museum) and Ålands konstmuseum (Åland Art Museum), both of which are open all year round. On the office side, the staff work on exhibition production, collection management, conservation, educational activities and administration.
Ålands kulturhistoriska museum is the province’s main museum of cultural history. The permanent exhibition tells of 7,500 years of Åland’s history, from the first inhabitants to the present day, divided into five epochs.
Ålands konstmuseum was founded in 1963, and the collection has since grown through purchases. In the early years works by both Finnish and Åland artists were bought, while more recently the focus has been on Åland art. The collections also include the private art collection donated by Irene and Halvdan Stenholm and the art collection deposited by the Stiftelsen Ålands Vänner (Åland Friends Foundation). The basic exhibition is rebuilt every year with a thematic perspective.
