About the museum
Mariehamnsmuseet wants to increase the interest of local residents and visitors in Mariehamn and the history of the town. The museum was started in 1987 by a group of pensioners and is located at Ålandsvägen 42, on the floor below Mathis-Hallen. It is maintained by Miniatyrstadens vänner r.f. (Friends of the Miniature Town).
The museum’s main attraction is Modellstaden (the Model Town), a miniature model showing what Mariehamn looked like in the 1920s. The group Nybyggarne (The Settlers) at the Mariehamn pensioners’ association has for more than thirty years built over 600 buildings at a scale of 1 metre to 1 centimetre. The details of the houses, the plantings in the town’s gardens and yards, and the people, animals, ships and cars placed in the model bring it to life.
Next to the Modellstaden is a small gallery where guest exhibitions and summer exhibitions on themes around Mariehamn are shown. Parts of the model can also be seen as virtual tours on the museum’s website.
