About the museum
Önningebymuseet was founded in 1992 by the Önningeby local heritage society (hembygdsförening) and is run on a voluntary basis. It is a specialist museum about the Önningeby colony, the artists’ colony founded in 1886 by the Finnish landscape painter Victor Westerholm. Both Finnish and Swedish artists took part, among them J.A.G. Acke, Elin Danielson-Gambogi, Hanna Rönnberg and Edvard Westman. In 1906–1913 Estonian artists also visited Önningeby.
The museum is housed in a renovated and extended cowshed (ladugård) from 1869, which belonged to the Jonesas farm and was used until 1980. The local heritage society also owns the Jonesas main farmhouse and its small cottage. The main farmhouse is being renovated and will be opened to visitors. The grounds also contain Sjöbloms emigrant- och torparmuseum (emigrant and crofters’ museum), Galleri Rita and the Målar-Gabriel härbre (storehouse).
The art collection comprises over 400 works. Part of it is permanently on display in the Irinasalen hall, where J.A.G. Acke’s monumental paintings Snöljus and Morgondimma hang, and in the Röda rummet (Red Room), where parts of the portrait collection are shown.
