About the museum
Sjökvarteret lies in Österhamn in Mariehamn and consists of red storehouses (bodar) and jetties by the water. The area includes a shipyard and a forge, as well as a museum of boat and ship building, where traditional boatbuilding skills are carried on.
The district was founded with the building of the galeas Albanus, whose keel was laid in 1986 and which was launched in 1988. Since then several other sailing vessels have been built on the site, among them the schooner Linden and the fishing smack Jehu.
The district also has workshops and studios for craftspeople and artists, including goldsmiths, and a small seamen’s chapel at the far end of the jetty. Sjökvarteret is owned by the Stiftelsen Sjöfartskvarteret i Mariehamn (Mariehamn Maritime Quarter Foundation).
