About the museum
The building that houses Ålands skolmuseum (Åland School Museum) today was built in 1888 by the teacher Viktor Jansson from Vårdö. Jansson taught and lived in the house until his death in 1895. The old school house, with its schoolroom and teacher's residence, has been carefully renovated so that it looks as it did around the turn of the century, 1900.
The idea of a school museum was first raised in 1975 by the education and culture department of the Government of Åland. The author Anni Blomqvist from Simskäla in Vårdö became involved in the question early on and proposed the old school at Storbacken as a suitable site. In 1991 it was decided that the school museum would be housed in the building, and in the same year the Åland government signed an agreement with Vårdö municipality to take over the building and use the plot.
The furnishings were collected from all over Åland, and most of the objects belong to Ålands museum. The exhibition also includes deposits from private individuals and Vårdö municipality. The teacher's residence is partly furnished with objects that belonged to Viktor Jansson and his family. The museum is open to visitors only in summer.
