About the museum
Ahlström Ruukki in Noormarkku is a historic ironworks area where Finnish industrial, architectural and design history meet. The extensive park-like area contains museum sites, exhibitions, landmark architecture, restaurant services and accommodation. The ironworks is part of the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH) network.
The Ahlström Voyage exhibition is located in the ironworks' old forge and tells the story of the Ahlström companies and the Ahlström family over more than 175 years. The exhibition shows, among other things, art glass from the Iittala, Karhula and Riihimäki glassworks that belonged to the group, a notable collection of works by Tapio Wirkkala and Timo Sarpaneva, and unique pieces of the Savoy vase, also known as the Aalto vase, designed by Alvar Aalto. The exhibition is best experienced on a guided tour.
The Makkarakoski sawmill museum presents the whole life cycle of a sawmill. The sawmill was first powered by water, then by steam, and finally by electricity. The sawing went on in the area for more than 200 years; the present sawmill was rebuilt after a fire in 1875, and when operations ended in 1956, the original machines remained in place.
