About the museum
Satakunnan Museo was founded in 1888 by the Porin Suomalainen Seura, and its collections began to grow right away. In 1899 the museum became an activity of the City of Pori, and at first it operated in temporary premises. In 1903 the museum moved permanently into the Iltama house, where the collections were shown in small exhibition rooms; the house has since been demolished.
The present museum building at Hallituskatu 11 was completed in 1973, designed by the Arkkitehtitoimisto Olaf Küttner Ky architecture office. It was one of the first buildings in Finland designed specifically for cultural history museum use. The museum has carried out regional duties since 1980, and in 2020 the Finnish Heritage Agency (Museovirasto) designated it as the regional responsibility museum. The museum’s third permanent exhibition, Elon merkkejä (Signs of Life), opened in 2018.
The Satakunnan Museo includes Luontotalo Arkki, the Rosenlew-museo, Rakennusperintökeskus Toivo, the Lavian kotiseutumuseo (local heritage museum of Lavia) and the museum tugboat Santtu at Reposaari. In 2021 the Satakunnan Museo and the Porin taidemuseo merged into joint museum services of the City of Pori.

The main entrance on Hallituskatu is the most accessible: the doors open by hand or electrically via the button marked with the blue ISA symbol. The doors that are opened by hand are quite heavy, and the outer doors have thresholds. The disabled parking space is on Hallituskatu in front of the museum, and a ramp leads to the terrace and the main door. On the Eteläranta side there is a free car park, from which steep steps lead to the entrance; a walkway also runs from the car park to the main entrance. A barrier-free lift serves all three floors of the permanent exhibition, and one ramp has a handrail. The barrier-free toilet is near the ticket desk; it has a changing table and a bedpan. A wheelchair can be borrowed. The Taavi stage in the permanent exhibition has an induction loop. Guide dogs and assistance dogs are welcome, and a water bowl can be obtained from the information desk. Guided tours can be adapted for special groups, for example in easy language, with sign language interpreting (the group books an interpreter), in other languages and with audio description; booking is about two weeks in advance. Studded shoes can damage the floors, so please bring indoor shoes or borrow felt slippers from the ticket desk while they last.
