About the museum

The Kahari farm is first mentioned in the land register of 1540. From 1790 it was a hereditary farm, passing from father to son within the Kahari family. The farm buildings were moved to their present site after the isojako (general land partition) at the end of the 18th century. In 1907 the rest of the farm was sold to A. Ahlström Osakeyhtiö, and the main building housed, among other things, a coaching inn.

The farm, which was threatened with demolition, was turned into a museum and donated to the Noormarkun kotiseutuyhdistys, a local heritage association founded at the same time. The initiative came from Ahlström’s agronomist Mortimer Harju-Jeanty and Maire Gullichsen. The association was founded on 7 June 1955, and at the inauguration of the local heritage house on 21 August 1955 Ahlström handed over the buildings and movable property to the association. A luhti, a riihi (threshing barn), a smoke sauna, a meadow barn and other buildings were moved to the yard, and Roosa’s cottage was added to the museum in 1960.

The actual local heritage museum operates in the bread-baking room (leivintupa, or pakari) of the main building. The yard also has a cellar, an aitta (storehouse), a luhti, a smithy and a vinttikaivo (well with a winch). The collections include peasant objects from Noormarkku as well as objects donated by Maire Gullichsen and Ahlström. Among the most valuable objects are a cradle and the so-called Kuninkaanpöytä (King’s Table).
