About the museum
The Porin taidemuseo opened in 1981. Its collection is based on the collection of the Maire Gullichsen Art Foundation and the art collection of the City of Pori, which include Finnish and foreign art from the 19th century onwards; the emphasis is on modernism and contemporary art.
The museum operates in a former customs building used for dyeing and packing goods, which belongs to the 19th-century Kivi-Pori building complex. The architect Kristian Gullichsen converted the building into an art museum, and its large Halli (Hall) is one of Finland’s most beautiful exhibition spaces. The underground Siipi (Wing) extension was completed in 2000, and within it a stone cellar dating from the 1640s has been preserved. After a comprehensive renovation the museum reopened in January 2025.
In 2021 the Satakunnan Museo (Satakunta Museum) and the Porin taidemuseo were merged into the joint museum services of the City of Pori. The art museum also serves as Pori’s official tourist information point.

The main entrance has a ramp, a motion sensor and an automatic door. The exhibitions are mostly step-free, but they change, so it is advisable to enquire in advance at customer service. A passenger lift goes to the first floor; a wheelchair user needs an assistant to use it, and staff will help. The step-free toilet is only on the lower floor. Induction loops are at customer service, in the lecture hall, in the meeting room and in the workshop. Wheelchairs, pushchairs, carriers and light seats can be borrowed. Some works have audio description available via a QR code; visually impaired guests may, together with an assistant, touch some sculptures wearing special gloves, depending on the exhibition. Some exhibitions may have loud sounds, darkness or bright lights. Assistance dogs, guide dogs and support dogs are welcome. The museum accepts the EU disability card and the Vessapassi (toilet pass).
