About the museum
Aineen taidemuseo came into being from the love of art of the Tornio couple Eila and Veli Aine. The Aineen Kuvataidesäätiö foundation they established began in 1974, and the foundation’s collection is the basis of the museum’s work. The museum opened in 1986, and in 2026 it celebrates its 40th anniversary. The museum is run by the City of Tornio.
The museum is located at Länsiranta, close to the Swedish border, in a building called Rajakartano, which also houses the Tornio library. The building was designed by Tornio architect Matti Porkka and completed in 1985.
The foundation’s collection represents Finnish fine art from the early 19th century to the present day. Its emphasis lies on the early 20th-century Finnish expressionists and on the Prisma group of the 1950s and 1960s. The museum’s own growing collection includes modern and contemporary art, and the focus of activities is contemporary art. Every year the museum organises exhibitions drawn from its own collections, workshops and events, and it carries out art education work.
