About the museum
Albert Edelfelt’s mother, Alexandra Edelfelt, rented a summer villa on the Haikko manor estate in 1879, which became the artist’s summer home until his death. Albert Edelfelt had a studio with a skylight built on the site in 1883. He spent 26 summers at Haikko, painted more than 220 works there, and died in August 1905 at Haikko, which he loved.
The artists’ association Konstnärsföreningen till Albert Edelfelts minne (Artists’ Association in Memory of Albert Edelfelt) raised funds to buy the studio and the surrounding land, and converted the studio into a studio museum in 1951. The association was turned into a foundation in 1958, and today the museum is run by the Albert Edelfelt Foundation, whose task is to preserve the artist’s memory and look after his original summer studio and its grounds.
A new building, Villa Albert, with a space for changing exhibitions and a museum shop, was completed in the studio’s grounds in 2019. At the same time the studio built in 1883 was restored to its original state as the artist’s studio. Its permanent exhibition includes works by Edelfelt owned by the foundation, heliogravures, photographs and objects that belonged to the artist.
