About the museum

The Walter Runeberg sculpture collection is a collection of works by the sculptor Walter Runeberg (1838–1920), assembled in Porvoo on Aleksanterinkatu. Walter Runeberg was the son of the poet J. L. Runeberg and one of the leading sculptors of his time. He studied in Copenhagen, Rome and Paris and adopted the neoclassical style. After his death his heirs donated the collection to the City of Porvoo.

The collection includes more than a hundred works: a rich selection of portrait heads, monument sketches and the artist’s tools. There are also plaster models of well-known works, such as the monument to Aleksanteri II on Senate Square in Helsinki, Apollo and Marsyas, Finland’s first major marble sculpture, the Per Brahe statues in Turku and Raahe, and the statue of J. L. Runeberg on the Esplanadi in Helsinki.

The collection is maintained by the Porvoo Museum (Porvoon museo). It is currently closed, and it can be viewed on the city’s website.
