About the museum
Aleksis Kivi died in this small log cabin in Tuusula on New Year’s Eve 1872, at the age of 38. The writer had been born at Palojoki in Nurmijärvi in 1834. In early 1872 he had been brought from a mental hospital to Tuusula, to the family of his brother Albert, and the cabin was his last place of residence.
The Student Union of the University of Helsinki (Helsingin yliopiston ylioppilaskunta) has owned the cabin since 1910, when Kivi’s brother Albert sold it. Tuusulan museo runs the cabin and keeps it open in the summer.
Kivi’s birthday, 10 October, is celebrated as Aleksis Kivi Day, when wreaths are laid on the writer’s grave in the Tuusula churchyard. The cabin is part of the cultural-historical ensemble on the shore of Lake Tuusula, right next to Erkkola.
