About the museum

Halosenniemi is the home and studio of the painter Pekka Halonen on the shore of Lake Tuusula. Halonen designed the house himself, and it was completed in 1902. The log building combines Finnish building traditions with foreign influences and the ideas of artist friends.

A family with eight children lived in the house, and the lake landscapes visible from its windows appear in Halonen’s paintings. The family lived in the house for about forty years, after which the property passed to the Municipality of Tuusula for museum use. The house is open to the public as a museum, and its most recent major renovation was carried out in the early 2020s.

Halosenniemi is one of the best-known sites of the Lake Tuusula artists’ community. In the museum, visitors can learn about the artist’s working and family life; around the house there is a garden, with a bench around a large silver willow and a view over the lake.

The main building has steps, thresholds and narrow doors, and the upper floor cannot be reached by wheelchair. A steep wheelchair ramp can be installed at the entrance on the kitchen side if arranged in advance; the route crosses uneven grass and cannot be used in winter, and an assistant is needed. The doorways on the lower floor are as narrow as 58 cm. From the car park to the main building it is about 100 m up a gently rising sand road. The toilets are in the ticket building, behind a step, and there is no accessible toilet. Assistance is recommended for visitors with visual or mobility impairments. Easy-language and audio-described guided tours, as well as remote guided tours, are possible by arrangement. Exhibition texts are available in several languages, in easy language and in Braille. There is a 360-degree virtual tour online.
