About the museum
Erkkola is a national romantic log villa completed in 1902 along the Rantatie in Tuusula. The house was built as a home by the cultural figure J. H. Erkko, close to the last place of residence of Aleksis Kivi. Erkkola was built at the same time and by the same builders as the nearby Halosenniemi, and it was designed by Pekka Halonen and his brother Antti.
The house's features include Jugendstil glazed stoves, made by the local potter and stove maker Johan Grönroos. Erkkola was partly built from the log walls of his croft. Erkko had only four years in the house before his death, after which the house and its contents were auctioned. For a hundred years Erkkola was a private residence with several owners.
The Tuusula municipality bought the house in 2006 with donations from the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation and renovated it for museum use. The house is a protected two-storey building in which visitors can explore the building and the exhibitions on display.
