About the museum
Daniel (Taneli) Medelplan (c. 1657–1737) worked as an engraver in printing houses in Turku and Viipuri. During the Great Wrath (Isonviha) the country's printing houses were moved to safety in Stockholm, and Medelplan carved 28 printing plates for his primer into wood. The clergy of Pälkäne commissioned the primer after becoming concerned about literacy in the parish. The primer was published in 1719, and on its last page was the first aapiskukko in Finland.
The museum is a small private person museum in the village of Kukkola, on the land of Näppilä, the birthplace of Medelplan. It was founded in 2005 by Allan Frilander and Arja and Heikki Liutta. The permanent exhibition tells of the origin and printing of the primer: on display are the printing plates, proofs and a plate printing press built by sculptor Allan Frilander, as well as artworks on the rooster theme, primers and portraits of Medelplan. A memorial stone to Medelplan, erected in the 1960s, stands in the yard. Visitors can buy kukkopipari (rooster gingerbread) and drinks, and there are activities for children on the primer and rooster themes.
