About the museum

Rajalan kämppä was built in 1946 as a home for forestry workers in the middle of the Laipanmaa forest area, in today’s Sahalahti in Kangasala. Yhtyneet Paperitehtaat (today UPM-Kymmene) had the cabin built for hauliers and fellers, since after the war logging increased and workers filled the bed places of the farms and crofts in the area. The cabin was built from large logs felled in the surroundings, hewn with a broadaxe (piilukirves).

The cabin was divided into three parts: the main cabin room, the foreman’s room, known as the terävä pää (sharp end), and the kitchen and the housekeeper’s quarters. At its best the cabin fed 30–40 men. The golden age lasted about twenty years, until roads and motor vehicles came into forestry work. Nestori Hanhikoski lived alone in the cabin until 2002.

The cabin was leased to Sahalahti-Seura ry, and it was restored through volunteer effort for museum and recreational use in 2004–2005. The restored cabin was brought into use on 28 June 2005. Sahalahti-Seura administers the cabin, and in summer concerts, literary evenings and a cabin church (kämppäkirkko) are held there. The cabin’s premises are also rented for events of associations and communities.
