About the museum
The Einari Junttila Art Museum is located in the former home and workspace of the painter Einari Junttila (1901–1975) in the village of Kittilä. Junttila was a native of Kittilä and was known in particular for his watercolours depicting the nature of Lapland. His career took off in the 1930s, when exhibitions in Germany and Helsinki brought him attention. His subjects were the fells, forest ponds, streams, bogs and riverside meadows around Kittilä.
The house was built in the late 1930s and was rebuilt after the war on the foundations of an old house. The museum was founded on 28 December 1991, 90 years after the artist's birth. It was established by the artist's daughter Terttu Junttila, who owns and maintains the museum.
