About the museum
The Muonio local heritage museum is located in the courtyard of Emma and Alfred Niva. After the war, Emma and Alfred built the Emmanpirtti on the site, and a large part of the museum’s objects come from Emma and her sister.
Museum activity began in 1982, when the main building was moved from Kihlanki to its present site. The wars destroyed a large part of Muonio, but residents donated many objects to the museum. The museum opened to the public in summer 1991.
The main building was built in the late 19th century as a residence for two families. On its outer wall is a memorial plaque that tells of the northernmost Jäger supply road. The courtyard’s storehouse was moved from Ylimuonio and dates from the 1850s; the drying barn and boat landing come from Kihlanki; and a residence from the post-war reconstruction era was built at its present site before the wars. In addition, the area has a municipal grain storehouse from the late 19th century, which later served as the municipality’s notice board.
