About the museum

The Kolari local heritage museum is located in the northern part of the village of Sieppijärvi, at Rova farm, where seven old buildings have been assembled. The main building, Pääkkölä or Pääkkö's pirtti, dates from around 1889 and displays household objects from two Kolari families from before the wars.

The oldest building in the museum is the Joen tupa (Joki's room), donated from Juurakkovaara in Saarenputaa. Based on a coin found in the room, it is estimated to date from 1771. The farmyard also has a summer cowshed and two granaries (aitta), which display agricultural tools and machinery as well as sleighs.

The museum collection contains 1,581 objects. Behind the cowshed begins an ancient trail (Muinaispolku) of about 300 metres, opened in 2005, along which the remains of a bread oven, stone cairns, hearths and two pit cremation graves can be seen.
