About the museum
The poet Eino Leino was born in 1878 in Paltaniemi in Paltamo, which now belongs to Kajaani. His family home was called Hövelö. The present Eino Leino House was built after Hövelö and serves as a place to learn about the poet’s life and work.
Elias Lönnrot bought the Hövelö croft in 1834 and lived there in 1834–1835. Antti and Emilia Lönnbohm bought the croft in 1859 and expanded it into a farm. The old Hövelö fell into disrepair and was demolished, and the memorial house was completed in 1978.
The house complex consists of the Eino Leino House, built in 1978, and Lystinurmi, built in the early 21st century. In the Father’s Room (Isän huone) there is a photo exhibition on the lives of Elias Lönnrot and Eino Leino. In summer the house has a café and a summer theatre. The house is also available for rent for celebrations and meetings.
