About the museum
Riihipiha is a private farming museum assembled in the village centre of Vuolijoki, founded and assembled by Iikka and Sinikka Alasalmi. The museum was established in 1991, during the economic recession, in memory of the real years of depression and famine of the past, and it is a tribute to the pioneer generations of earlier times.
The purpose of the museum is to collect, preserve and present the farmyard of the Kainuu countryside and its activities before electricity came into general use. The museum area has 35 numbered buildings and about 4,000 objects, which tell of life in Vuolijoki and in Kainuu in earlier generations.
The area includes, among others, a bank museum, a museum of the Suojeluskunta (Civil Guard) and Lotta work, a forest unit and a village shop museum. A speciality is a department of agricultural advice of a kind that cannot be found elsewhere in Finland.
