About the museum
The Paltamo local heritage museum is owned by Paltamo-Seura ry and operates in a three-storey building that was converted from the parish loan granary into a museum. The loan granary was built in 1910, and the museum opened in August 1962. The grain bins of the granary have been renovated into exhibition sections.
The museum collections consist of objects related to peasant culture, tools of various trades, and objects related to the history of the municipality and the parish. The museum also displays the interior of a travelling school (kiertokoulu), and on the upper floor there is a furnished Paltamo pirtti corner. The collection contains about 1,700 objects, mostly donated from the Paltamo area.
In summer 2011 a storehouse was moved next to the museum building; the Taavetti and Elsa Keränen estate had donated it to Paltamo-Seura. The storehouse was previously located at Leppälä in Härmänmäki, and with it the museum received around fifty objects from the Keränen family.
