About the museum

The Lelumuseo Eilisen lapset ja Leikityt lelut (Toy Museum Yesterday’s Children and Played-With Toys) is a summer exhibition at Meteli in Kanerva, Paltamo, run by Meteli Seis ry. The objects in the exhibition are collectibles gathered over about 48 years from different parts of Finland by Eija and Tapani Homanen from Paltamo. The exhibition was first shown about 18 years ago and has expanded every year.

The collecting hobby began with plaster figures, but other old objects have also accumulated. Today the exhibition has almost 2,000 plaster works of art from the early 20th century, as well as dolls, teddy bears, horse figures, scrap pictures (kiiltokuvat) and mechanical toys. The objects illustrate childhood from the 19th century to the 1960s.

The plaster figures are placed in a large log pirtti (main room) built in 1914, with figures depicting children’s everyday life as well as dog, cat and horse figures. The Played-With Toys section is housed in an 18th-century log storehouse. Besides tin toys such as cars, trains, aeroplanes and motorcycles, it has mechanical and Disney-themed toys and equipment for girls’ games and playing house. In the courtyard there is also a small flea-market storehouse, which is open during the exhibition’s opening hours and by arrangement.
