About the museum

Eloaitta is a local heritage museum in the centre of the Kaavi village, where visitors can explore the life of the people of Kaavi in earlier times. The museum operates in a grain storehouse completed in the 1840s, which was built to supplement the premises of the Kaavi loan grain store. The parish’s first loan grain store was founded by royal decree in 1794, and the present storehouse was built in 1845–1848. The last grain procurement decision was made in 1940, after which the building was rented for a long time to the Kaavin osuuskauppa (Kaavi Cooperative Store) as a warehouse.

The idea of restoring the storehouse for museum use arose in 1976. At first Eloaitta was meant to serve as a summer sales exhibition space for the products of Kaavi entrepreneurs, but soon the idea of a local heritage museum emerged. The Kaavi parish society (Kaavin pitäjäseura) rented the building in 1979, and the storehouse was restored as a local heritage museum. The parish society has owned the building since 2011.

The museum’s collection consists of objects donated to the parish society by private individuals. The Kaavi municipality takes part in the activities by hiring young people as museum guides for the summer.
