About the museum
The Muuruvesi Local Heritage Association (Muuruveden Kotiseutuyhdistys) maintains a local heritage museum, founded in 1965. The museum has three buildings. The main building offers a thematic overview of Muuruvesi’s history through photographs and objects; the themes include the church building, school activities, the agricultural college, timber processing and log floating, and the war years and Lotta activities. On display are, for example, a shoemaker’s tools and the spinning wheels and traps used in processing flax and wool.
The upper floor of the main building has peasant household objects, clothing and abundant birch-bark objects. The objects date from the late 19th century to 1960. On the ground floor of the storehouse building are objects related to hunting and fishing, and the upper floor has been furnished with the tables, benches and implements of a savupirtti (smoke cabin), such as looms, churns and cradles (kätkyt). The storehouse also contains dugout boats (ruuhi) found in water and bog, and a stone sculpture of the seita (sacred stone) of the Sámi god.
The machine hall has a comprehensive collection of old farm machinery, including a threshing machine, old sledges and rake machines.
