About the museum
Museo Brunou is a factory and workers' museum in the oldest workers' residential building in the area. It presents the industrial history of the Strömsdal-Juantehdas ironworks and cardboard factory, and the everyday life of the community. The museum is named after the founder of the ironworks, Brynolf Brunou. It is maintained by the Juankosken Kulttuurihistoriallinen Seura (Juankoski Cultural History Society) and opened in 1991.
The Juankoski ironworks was founded in 1746, when commissioner Brynolf Brunou received permission to establish a blast furnace on the Juckaisjoki river. The ironworks used lake ore and bog iron as raw materials. Owners changed, and the ironworks only became truly profitable at the end of the 19th century, under the Russian Ponomarev family. At the beginning of the 20th century Baron Anton von Alftan bought the ironworks; iron was no longer smelted, and cardboard manufacture took its place.
In 2026 it will be 280 years since the Juankoski ironworks was founded.
