About the museum
The museum was founded in 1991 by the association Etelä-Karjalan Vanhat Ajoneuvot ry in a rented cowshed at Karjalanportinmäki. The first part was opened for exhibitions on 3 August 1991, and the first exhibition season lasting the whole summer was in 1992. The name Etelä-Karjalan Automuseo was confirmed on 1 April 1993. The association bought the property in 1996 and has renovated it with volunteer labour, including turning the silos into exhibition spaces and fitting a new sheet-metal roof.
The permanent exhibition consists mainly of about 30 cars and 20 motorcycles from 1920–1980. The vehicles are mostly owned by members of the association, and part of the collection changes in summer when the vehicles are on the road. In addition, bicycles, mopeds, horse-drawn sledges, snowmobiles, outboard motors, a small car workshop with tools and a photo exhibition on professional motoring in the Suur-Ruokolahti and Rautjärvi area are on display. The second silo contains objects from the Imatra races.
In May 2022 an exhibition of registration plates from the Finnish Registration Plate Museum opened at the museum. In 2023 the Automuseoiden Neuvottelukunta (Car Museums' Advisory Council) chose Etelä-Karjalan Automuseo as Vehicle Museum of the Year.
