About the museum
The museum operates in the official residence of the chief of the Ylä-Kanava (Upper Canal) district, completed in 1845, in the Mälkiä–Mustola canal area. The exhibition presents the stages of building the canal, from the Pontuksen kanava (Pontus Canal) of the 1600s to today’s Saimaa Canal. On display are, among other things, a pantograph from 1844, with which precise drawings were made for the canal project, and a video clip of the construction of the present canal in 1963–1968.
The canal officials and their residential buildings have their own section: the exhibition contains uniforms of district chiefs and a furnished office of the district chief, and scale models of locks are on display. The building is surrounded by a historically valuable yard with flower beds and park paths, and the outbuilding houses an exhibition dealing with Suvorov’s canals (Suvorovin kanavat).
